Defending champs secure Shahid Afridi signing

Pakistan Twenty20 skipper Shahid Afridi will play for the Hampshire Hawks during this summers Friends Provident t20 tournament the club has announced.

The 30 year old all rounder will join South African spinner Imran Tahir as the clubs overseas players as the Royals look to defend their t20 title which they won in dramatic style against the Somerset Sabres last year.

"Having played at the Rose Bowl for Pakistan, I know it's becoming one of the best places to watch cricket," Afridi told the club website.

"I hope very much to play a big part in the club's success in 2011," he added.

Having missed out on playing for the Royals last summer Afridi said it would have been fantastic to have been a part of the team which won the Friends Provident t20 at the Rose Bowl.

"Shahid is a wonderful all-round cricketer and will be a real asset to our club over what should be an incredibly exciting summer at the Rose Bowl," said Hampshire manager Giles White.
